Marea – Género, Artes y Humanidades & Margarita Sea Soma

Marea – Género, Artes y Humanidades is a feminist nonprofit based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, working at the intersection of gender justice, arts, education, and digital culture. Marea's flagship project, Margarita Sea Soma, is a feminist podcast, soon becoming a sound magazine, that connects 22 correspondents across 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, from Nicaragua and Haiti to Venezuela and Guatemala, who report on stories mainstream media overlooks. The network operates under a shared collective pseudonym, Margarita, as a form of political protection, and has already produced more than 80 podcast episodes amplifying underrepresented voices across the region.

With our $500 Giving Joy microgrant, Marea is running a digital security workshop for its full correspondent network, delivered live in Spanish, French, and English so no correspondent is excluded by language. The training covers threat modeling, account security, secure communication tools like Signal, and how to strip identifying metadata from the audio files correspondents produce, plus how the network sustains these practices together, not just individually. The workshop includes a facilitator guide, a feedback tool, and an Ethical and Feminist Collective AI Guide, developed in all three languages and shared with all 22 correspondents and six allied feminist organizations across Latin America and the Caribbean, extending the network's political protection into the digital layer.

The Expected Impact

This grant is expected to directly benefit the 22 correspondents in the Margarita Sea Soma network, supporting an estimated 22 families through safer, more secure working conditions. Over 5,200 additional people — the communities, sources, and audiences reached through the correspondents' journalism and podcast work — are expected to benefit indirectly, with six allied feminist organizations across the region also receiving the workshop materials and AI guide.

Looking Ahead

Over the grant period, Marea will finalize the workshop design and materials, deliver the trilingual digital security workshop via Zoom with live interpretation, and compile feedback from participants. From there, the team will complete and deliver the Ethical and Feminist Collective AI Guide to the full network and its allied organizations, then follow up with correspondents to assess how the new practices are being adopted.
