Amplifying Voices & Fostering Equality

Women's Equality Day, August 26th, commemorates the struggles of women to be heard, as fierce advocates who gained the statutory right to vote. Being heard is still a struggle by women globally but a Kurdish community radio station, Radio Dangi NWE and its Media Director, Rangeen Salem Mahmood (in photo on left), is trying to shed light and amplify women’s voices in Kurdistan and Iraq.

The Giving Joy grant sponsored four enlightening radio programs and ten impactful radio spots (April-July 2023), focused on challenges faced by women in Halabja and Iraq and advocating for their rights. Radio programs shed light on gender inequality in the workplace, salary disparities and the need for equal opportunities, the importance of education for women and girls, and he role of men in supporting women's rights and fostering gender equality.

“We explored various ways to protect and promote women's rights to create a more just and equitable society. From pursuing justice in Iraq to highlighting success stories of resilient women who have overcome challenges. We aimed to inspire change and foster hope for a better future.”

The impact of these programs has been truly remarkable. The radio station reaches an estimated 80,000 direct beneficiaries. However, the reach extends far beyond the airwaves, as social media has allowed Rangeen to touch the lives of countless individuals, both present and future.
