Karwemera United Women Association (KUWA)
Founded by 15 women in Kasese district in Uganda, the Karwemera United Women Association (KUWA) is a community based organization that promotes human rights, psycho social support, saving and internal lending methodology and income generating activities, environment management, life skills and health among others. In August 2023, KUWA collected 106 used tires from Kasese municipality, then trained 32 women ((a combination is single mothers, teen mothers, widows and women with disabilities) to repurpose these tires, teaching them skills such as making shoes, creating tire gardens for vegetables, chairs, tables, and yard art. The project also involved purchasing tools like wheelbarrows, utility knives, hammers, and pliers.
The impact of these activities is significant. The 32 women now have skills in repurposing tires, enabling them to make shoes and use tires for various creative purposes. They are passing on these skills to their children and neighbors. The project fostered unity among women who collaborated during tire collection, training, and other activities. Community members have learned the usefulness of old tires and the importance of not dumping them in the environment.
Additionally, the project contributes to environmental sustainability by recycling tires, reducing landfill space, and preventing environmental issues such as water and air pollution. The recycling effort also addresses health concerns, as dumped tires can serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which contribute to the spread of malaria. Overall, the project has positive effects on individuals, the organization, and the community, ultimately benefiting approx. 100 people.
