Laura Quiñonez

In the lush agricultural region of Caluma, Ecuador, Laura Quiñonez, a single mother of two and dedicated community volunteer, is leading a grassroots effort to support vulnerable women and promote sustainability. As a member of the Fundación de Desarrollo Integral y Amparo Social Caluma , Laura has teamed up with eight fellow women heads of household to launch an innovative eco-packaging initiative, made possible through a Giving Joy grant.

Using agricultural byproducts such as cocoa shells, banana leaves, and bijao leaves, the women are transforming local plant waste into organic packaging for food products like sweets, chocolates, and traditional dishes. Grant-funded activities began in February 2025 with a 20-hour training on food handling and eco-friendly packaging techniques. Each woman received the tools necessary, machetes and scissors, to collect and process the raw materials. Together, they also designed new product labels to improve branding and appeal to environmentally conscious buyers.

The initiative is already making a meaningful impact. Participants, like María, a Colombian migrant, have gained confidence and practical skills that not only increase their income but also expand their future opportunities. The creation of branded, sustainable packaging has improved production quality and visibility in local markets. In total, the project has benefited approximately 48 people, eight women directly and about 40 family members, while inspiring broader community interest in sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, the group plans to begin full-scale production, market their products locally and online, and engage more women in the project. They aim to build a self-sustaining model that promotes both economic empowerment and environmental responsibility.

With continued support, Laura and her team hope to expand their reach, gain access to specialized training, and explore new sales channels. Their journey demonstrates how creativity, collaboration, and a small grant can spark lasting change.
