Mona Hemieda
Mona Hemieda, a dedicated Egyptian lawyer and advocate for women's rights, identified a critical gap in legal education concerning gender-based violence against women in Egypt. With support from the Giving Joy grant, Mona launched an innovative moot court simulation to address this void. The initiative engaged 26 law students and recent graduates from various Egyptian law schools, selected through a rigorous process.
This project provided participants with in-depth training on feminist principles, the intersection of gender and legal frameworks, the importance of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the women, peace, and security agenda. Its primary aim was to raise awareness of women’s rights, equipping participants with both legal knowledge and practical skills. Under the guidance of a seasoned lawyer with over 15 years of experience, participants refined their abilities to craft legal memoranda and present compelling legal arguments.
After the theoretical foundation, participants shifted to hands-on practice with a real-world case study. This case involved complex issues of discrimination in criminal and civil law, particularly within divorce and domestic violence contexts. Working in teams, participants analyzed the case, drafted legal solutions, and presented their findings in a moot court setting. The initiative culminated in oral arguments evaluated by a legal expert, allowing participants to showcase their newfound legal acumen and personal growth.
Through this experience, participants gained insight into local and international laws protecting women's rights. They explored the challenges women face in areas like employment and education, including wage gaps and domestic violence. Moreover, they learned the importance of raising awareness of women’s rights and the societal role in supporting these rights through campaigns and initiatives.
For Mona, the Giving Joy grant was transformative. It reignited her social project and gave her the confidence to leave a previous job that stifled her creativity and potential. “While financial independence tied me to that position,” she shared, “the grant empowered me to pursue my passion and push my limits.” Despite the modest amount, the grant helped Mona attract partners with greater expertise, boosting her confidence. “I’ve reinvented myself—now proactive, ambitious, and a catalyst for change. This grant was a divine signal, urging me to enhance the status of Egyptian women in society.”
Mona’s work has not only made a significant impact on the participants but has also bolstered her belief in her own potential. The positive feedback she received from both participants and trainers has affirmed her ability to contribute meaningfully to the legal community and society. The project's success has led to growing interest for future rounds, with endorsements from participants who benefited both legally and personally.
Participant Feedback: "Through my participation in the moot court, I gained a deep understanding of legal concepts and how to apply them in practical situations. I developed critical thinking and analytical skills that will help me throughout my legal career."
