Mooting for Change: Shaping Egypt’s Future Legal Defenders

Mona Hemieda (in blue dress sitting in middle above) , a passionate Egyptian lawyer and women's rights advocate, is making waves in legal education. Recognizing a gap in the understanding of gender-based violence in Egypt’s legal system, Mona took action. Thanks to a Giving Joy grant, she launched an innovative moot court simulation to empower the next generation of legal minds.

The program brought together 26 law students and recent graduates from across Egypt, all selected through a rigorous process. Through in-depth training, participants explored feminist legal principles, gender dynamics, the significance of the CEDAW convention, and the women, peace, and security agenda.

Under the mentorship of a seasoned lawyer with over 15 years of experience, participants honed their legal skills through practical exercises like drafting legal memoranda and mastering persuasive argumentation. They also tackled a real-life case study involving discrimination in divorce and domestic violence cases. The moot court culminated in oral pleadings before a legal expert, allowing students to showcase their newly sharpened legal acumen.

Benefits extended beyond legal education. Participants gained valuable insights into the practical challenges facing women, including wage gaps, domestic violence, and barriers to education. They also learned about the cultural factors that impact women’s rights, reinforcing the importance of social awareness and advocacy.

For Mona, the Giving Joy grant was transformative. It reignited her social project and gave her the confidence to leave a previous job that stifled her creativity and potential. “While financial independence tied me to that position,” she shared, “the grant empowered me to pursue my passion and push my limits.”

Despite the modest amount, the grant helped Mona attract partners with greater expertise, boosting her confidence. I’ve reinvented myself—now proactive, ambitious, and a catalyst for change. This grant was a divine signal, urging me to enhance the status of Egyptian women in society.”

With enthusiastic feedback from participants and growing interest for future rounds, Mona's initiative is paving the way for lasting change for women in Egypt.
