Ripple Effect at the Border: Women Lifting Women
Along the U.S.–Mexico border, migrant women face instability, violence, and limited access to essentials like health care, menstrual products, and safe work. In this environment, trustworthy information and economic opportunities can be lifesaving.
Kaya González, Sociocultural Manager of Àureas MX, leads efforts to support migrant women through menstrual and sexual health services, economic empowerment, and integration. With our Giving Joy microgrant, Àureas MX provided more than 80 women with menstrual health kits, technical training, and virtual support - creating a ripple effect that has reached over 150 additional women.
Through the grant, Àureas MX distributed 70 menstrual health kits at a migration station and via street outreach, and ran six “Tejiendo Autonomía”(or Weaving Autonomy) workshops where refugee women learned to make artisanal cosmetics as a pathway to income (see photos). They also offered a virtual support line with guidance on sexual health, sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, and psychosocial referrals, while creating safe spaces for dialogue and emotional resilience.
Women gained both practical skills and confidence. As one participant shared, “Now I know I can generate income and that I am not alone.” In early 2026, Àureas MX plans to launch “Golondrina” products, strengthen partnerships, and expand peer mentoring so more women can build sustainable autonomy.
