Changing the Game: Empowering Women Coaches in Egypt

In Egypt, women’s participation in sports has historically been limited, with many facing cultural, social, and institutional barriers. Despite these challenges, female participation in sports is growing. According to recent reports, women now make up approximately 30% of Egypt's athletes, and the government has made strides to increase female inclusion in sports programs. However, women coaches remain rare, particularly in marginalized communities, and the push for gender equality in sports leadership continues.

At Impact Academy Egypt, this gap is being addressed head-on. Founded by Sally Hassona, a gender equality advocate and sports educator, Impact Academy empowers girls and women through sports, leadership training, and STEM education. With the support of our Giving Joy micro grant, Impact Academy has taken a step toward creating sustainable change by training women coaches in gender-inclusive coaching, leadership, and integrating STEM into sports.

Training Future Coaches

In July - October 2025, Impact Academy conducted a series of workshops and mentorship sessions, providing women with the tools to become future coaches and leaders. These workshops included technical training in boxing and football/soccer, as well as leadership development sessions and practical coaching labs for young girls.

Building a Coaching Pipeline

The grant enabled the launch of the “Coach Her Lab” initiative, which created a structured coaching curriculum and provided stipends and materials to ensure accessibility. This initiative not only equipped women with the skills to coach but also helped increase the visibility of women in sports leadership positions in Egypt.

Impact on the Community

The program directly impacted 75 individuals, including 10 young women athletes and 5 female coaches. One standout story is that of Tia Hamza, who interned with the Anti-Doping Committee at the African Aquatics Championships and is now mentoring younger girls. The initiative is also reshaping perceptions in the community, with more parents and local clubs recognizing women as capable leaders in sports.

Looking Ahead

Impact Academy’s work isn’t stopping here. In the months to come, they will launch the “Girls Train Girls” coaching camp and integrate new coaches into community training sessions. The goal is to expand women’s roles in sports and continue providing opportunities for growth and leadership.
