From Tires to Hives: How Women Beekeepers Are Creating a Buzz in Cameroon

Nkinin Beniot, ECIC's co-founder

Who knew car tires could be the secret to a thriving beekeeping business? Thanks to the creative minds at Eco Innovation and Creation (ECIC) in Bambili, Cameroon, 50 women and girls are now mastering the art of sustainable beekeeping, all while saving the planet—one upcycled tire at a time!

With the generous support of our Giving Joy $500 grant, ECIC’s team trained participants to create eco-friendly beehives using materials like raffia bamboo, plastic containers, and, yes, used car tires. Talk about turning trash into treasure! These tires aren’t just recycled; they provide affordable, sustainable beehives that regulate temperature, deter pests, and help produce delicious honey. Plus, they’re creating a buzz of income opportunities with honey, beeswax, and even honey-based beauty products.

But wait—there’s more! The project didn’t just benefit the 50 women—it impacted 250 community members (including some curious men and boys), and sparked important conversations about pollination and bee conservation. The tires aren’t the only things making a difference; this project is building a stronger, more sustainable community.

As Nkinin Beniot, ECIC's co-founder, put it: “This project strengthened my resilience and confidence in community development.” And they’re not stopping here! Future plans include expanding training on pollination, helping more women engage in the honey value chain, and even teaching skills to turn those old tires into furniture. Yes, you read that right—recycled furniture!

ECIC’s project is laying the groundwork for sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation in Bambili. With continued support, this buzzing initiative will keep growing, creating a long-term impact on the community and beyond.
